Under-Sink Storage That Works Around the Plumbing
Choose caddies, adjustable shelves, and compact bins without blocking shutoff valves or hiding leaks.
Our guides explain practical buying considerations; they do not represent hands-on product tests. The shopping links below are ordinary retailer links and currently do not earn us a commission. How our links work.

The space under a sink rarely resembles a simple rectangular cabinet. A drain occupies the middle, supply lines run behind it, and a disposal may consume one side. Add a few tall bottles and the back becomes difficult to reach. A useful organizer works around these constraints while leaving the plumbing visible and accessible. The first task is measuring the obstacles, not searching for the tallest two-tier rack.
Map the cabinet before shopping
Empty the cabinet and inspect it for moisture, damaged surfaces, or unexplained staining. Address active leaks before returning belongings. Record the cabinet opening, interior width, available depth, and the height below each pipe or disposal. Include hinges and any center stile; an organizer can fit inside the cabinet yet fail to pass through its doorway.
Locate shutoff valves and keep their approach clear. A removable caddy is easier to move in a hurry than a tightly fitted stack of drawers. Do not cover the entire cabinet with objects that would hide a slow leak. If you use a protective liner, choose one you can lift for inspection and allow the surface beneath it to remain dry. A liner manages small messes; it does not repair plumbing.
Which organizer suits the shape?
| Cabinet situation | Practical choice | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Low central drain | Two short bins on either side | Little vertical expansion |
| Tall clear space on one side | Narrow tiered organizer | Bottle heights and drawer travel need checking |
| Irregular plumbing | Portable cleaning caddy | Carries fewer supplies but moves easily |
A slide-out rack helps only when it extends far enough to reveal its contents without hitting the door. Check whether installation requires screws and whether those screws suit the cabinet construction. For a rental, a freestanding option may be preferable, but it should still stand securely. Adjustable shelves need enough supported surface for the bottles they hold; a narrow bridge over a pipe should not become a precarious tower.
Store for the actual cleaning route
Group supplies by where they go. A kitchen caddy might hold the cleaner appropriate for your counter, a brush, and separate cloths. Bathroom products can live elsewhere if carrying them from the kitchen adds work. Keep products in their original labeled containers, follow storage directions, and use appropriate secure storage where children or pets might gain access. Organization does not make a hazardous product safe to leave within reach.
Avoid transferring cleaners into decorative bottles for visual consistency. Labels provide directions, precautions, and contact information. Store products upright and do not place incompatible chemicals together where leaks could mix. Never mix cleaning chemicals. If a bottle has leaked, follow its label and suitable safety guidance before cleaning the area; do not treat the spill as ordinary pantry clutter.
Features worth paying attention to
A smooth, wipeable base is easier to maintain than a basket that traps drips in intricate corners. A caddy handle should remain accessible when bottles are loaded. Compare the organizer's own weight plus the supplies you plan to carry. Test the routine with an existing basket before buying a larger one; a fully loaded caddy may be less convenient than two small task-specific groups.
Consider keeping sponges and brushes where they can dry after use instead of sealing them into the cabinet. Damp tools in an enclosed space introduce a moisture problem the organizer cannot solve. Do not hang a bulky door basket until you check that it closes without pressing on the pipes or bottles. Thin cabinet doors also impose installation limits, so follow the hardware manufacturer's guidance.
What to leave out
The under-sink space does not need to hold every refill in the house. Move excess stock to suitable storage that meets product-label requirements. Skip organizers sold primarily on their theoretical bottle count; bottles vary widely in height and shape. Avoid adding a second shelf if it makes the shutoff valves hard to reach. Accessibility has more value here than maximizing every cubic inch.
Questions that come up
Are expandable racks always the best option? No. They can adapt to some pipe layouts, but simple bins may fit better and come out faster during maintenance.
Should I install drawers? They are useful if the cabinet construction, doorway, and plumbing allow them. Check mounting instructions and the complete extension path before ordering.
How often should I reset this area? Inspect it when replenishing supplies and whenever you notice moisture or an unusual smell. Removing two manageable bins makes that inspection much easier than dismantling a crowded rack.
